Impact

Through careful planning for the public phase of the campaign, the OSU Foundation is laying the groundwork to build long-term support for OSU. One initiative involves working with the university to develop partnerships between OSU and industry, aiming to increase research collaborations and other opportunities for partnership. Consultant John MacDonald, CEO and founder of the MacDonald Group, has been meeting with faculty and working to aggregate university research strengths and align them with industry needs. Identified research clusters include energy, natural resources, the environment, and human health.

With an initial focus on corporations in Oregon, in the last nine months President Ed Ray, other university leaders, and Julie Brandis, OSU Foundation Director of Corporate Relations, have visited 20 companies and hosted numerous representatives on campus. In the coming year, university and foundation leaders plan to expand the focus and pursue corporate partnerships on a national level.

Gifts from corporations and private business owners are providing extraordinary educational experiences to OSU students and supporting critical research.

For Students: Hillside Ranch partnership with Agricultural Sciences

Over the last few years, the Department of Animal Sciences has developed a partnership with Gary Ferguson, owner of Hillside Ranch outside Lewisburg, Ore. Ferguson donated his Shorthorn cattle herd to OSU, allows them to be maintained on his property, and donates funds to employ a herd manager, among other gifts. This partnership is at the heart of a plan to develop a student-managed purebred teaching herd in conjunction with Linn-Benton Community College. The ranch provides exciting educational opportunities for Animal Sciences students as well as those from the College of Veterinary Medicine.

For Oregon: Triad Machinery and Pacific Fibre partnership with Forestry

The OSU Student Logging Training Program is a unique opportunity within the College of Forestry for students to gain real-life training in practical logging skills. For the third year, Portland-based Triad Machinery has provided access to a new log loader, making it possible for the students to use state-of-the-art equipment. Pacific Fibre Products, Inc., is among the businesses that support the logging program with financial gifts.

For the World: Second Wind partnership with Engineering

In January Second Wind, a wind data company based in Massachusetts, donated two of its Triton sonic wind profilers to OSU. This gift, valued at more than $100,000, assists the wind energy research led by Dr. Stel Walker, director of OSU's Energy Resources Research Laboratory.
