December 31, 2011
The OSU Monthly Campaign Update tracks progress toward our $1 billion campaign goal, celebrates successes along the way, and, above all, showcases the impact philanthropy makes on OSU students, the state of Oregon, and our world.
The first six months of the 2011-12 fiscal year ended December 31 with $45.8 million in gifts, passing the halfway mark on our goal for the year. These December gifts raised The Campaign for OSU total to $783.4 million, representing 92 percent of our $850 million goal. (More on campaign progress.)
This first half of FY12 was an unusual period in the campaign. It began very slowly; in fact, July 2011 was among the five worst months in the campaign to date. Yet the period had a strong ending, with generous donors making December 2011 one of the campaign's best months. Overall, this period was one of the three best first halves of a fiscal year in The Campaign for OSU.
Even more notable in this period were the type of gifts made to the university. A variety of gifts categorized as planned gifts comprised a much higher percentage of the gift types during this period than we've seen in the rest of the campaign. Many external factors can shape donor preferences as they structure their gifts, and over the last seven years the OSU Foundation has consciously adapted to the changing economic times to sustain the campaign's momentum. These results in planned giving are also the result of the hard work of excellent staff in our Office of Gift Planning, an area in which the Foundation has purposefully invested during the campaign.
Another interesting trend is the increase in donors at the $1,000+ level (up 20% over this time last year). This is a good indication that efforts to expand OSU's pool of donors are working. The Campaign for OSU is the university's first campaign, and building the base of potential donors is critical for future growth.
In the first weeks of the new year we achieved an exciting campaign milestone: gifts from the OSU community have met the $135 million goal for scholarships, fellowships, and student awards. This success attests to our donors' deep commitment to bringing the finest students to our campus, and to ensuring that promising students from all walks of life have the opportunity to experience an OSU education. Plans are in the works for a new campaign initiative to continue to build support for the university's high-achieving students.
This month's update highlights a few of the endowed scholarships that were created or expanded over the last six months — through planned gifts — and illustrate how the campaign has an impact on our students, our state, and our world:
• FOR STUDENTS: Ronald M. Coblantz Business Scholarship (College of Business)
• FOR OREGON: Nancy Wyrick and Rick Teeter Endowed Scholarship (university-wide)
• FOR THE WORLD: Jackson Wong Memorial Scholarship (College of Engineering)
