Rose Festival Parade Viewing Event
OSU alumni and friends painted a section of downtown orange during the 2011 Portland Rose Festival when more than 100 President's Circle donors and family members gathered to enjoy the Grand Floral Parade. Participants were treated to lunch, OSU keepsakes, and reserved seating to take in all the sights and sounds of parade pageantry.
Oregon State University presented the parade's Healthy Planet section, with Benny leading the way. A celebration of sustainability, this section featured the first-ever electric float, designed and built by the Astoria Regatta. Also featured were floats from Portland General Electric and The Oregonian – which showcased human energy with its second bicycle-powered float.
For more than a decade, OSU has led the state, and in some cases the nation, in sustainable living research and practices. Here are a few highlights from OSU's Healthy Planet initiative:
In 2011, OSU launched the 1st LEED Platinum power plant in the U.S.
OSU is the Pac-12 Conference champion in the EPA Green Power Partnership's 2010-11 Green Power Challenge.
OSU is home to the West Coast's only Design and Human Environment doctoral program.
In 2011, OSU was named to the Princeton Review's “Green Colleges.”
OSU is one of the first schools to tap students' kinetic energy through elliptical machines.
