Provost Talks about OSU's Global Reach (video)
OSU's philanthropic community celebrated the university's growing international impact at the 44th annual President's Dinner. The November 10 event at the Portland Art Museum attracted 300 guests.
In his remarks, President Ed Ray reflected on the campaign tagline, "This amazing place, this historic moment," and how its meaning has expanded. "While we knew that OSU is an ‘Amazing Place,' we didn't fully understand that our reach could expand so quickly throughout the world, and the speed with which we would be recognized as a truly leading international research university relied upon around the globe," he said, citing faculty leading global initiatives in many fields.
In a video presentation, Provost and Executive Vice President Sabah Randhawa also described student-led humanitarian initiatives in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Kenya, and Guatemala.
Campaign Steering Committee co-chairs Patrick Stone and Jim Rudd discussed the impact of campaign gifts, including the recent success of the Provost's Faculty Match Program, through which donors established or expanded 21 endowed faculty position funds. A video introduced Rod Dashwood, the inaugural holder of one of these new positions.
Through the campaign, donors also have created 425 new scholarship funds, and one beneficiary, Ishan Patel of Redmond, Ore., spoke about his biomedical engineering research. A senior in the University Honors College on the pre-med track, Ishan has created a model of blood thrombosis, or blood clots, now being used in the lab as a screener for new medicines to combat stroke and heart attacks.
The final part of the program welcomed new members into OSU's highest donor recognition group, the Harris Society: those whose cumulative gifts to OSU have exceeded $1 million. The third campaign co-chair, Pat Reser, circled back to the evening's international theme, noting that the needs of the world must be addressed by people working together. "That is why it is so exciting to see our group of philanthropic leaders and highly engaged investors continue to grow each year," she said.
