The Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation
The Valley family’s ties with OSU go back three generations. The late Wayne Valley, ’36, was an OSU football player who went on to a highly successful business career as a home builder in California. He was also a long-time major owner of the Oakland Raiders. His wife Gladys, ’33, who passed away in 1998, was the first secretary of the College of Science, serving under two deans. Their late son, Patrick Wayne Valley, ’69, played rugby and football for Oregon State. The OSU tradition in the Valley family continued with grandson Wade Westhoff, ’93, the son of the couple’s daughter Sonya (Sunny). The Valleys’ daughter Tamara Valley is currently President of the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation.
The Valley Foundation was established in 1977 and has supported OSU generously ever since. In addition to the $20 million gift to build the Linus Pauling Science Center, the Valley Foundation has made gifts supporting the endowed Wayne and Gladys Valley Chair in Marine Biology, an endowed scholarship, the rugby program, construction of Patrick Wayne Valley Field, the OSU Center for the Humanities, the University Theater, the Valley Football Center, the Valley Gymnastics Center, the Marine Mammal Research program at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, expansion of the Valley Library, and the Large Animal Clinic in the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Background
The Reser Family
The late Al Reser and his wife Pat have both served in leadership roles at their family’s company, Reser’s Fine Foods -- Al was chairman of the board; Pat is corporate secretary. Among other major donations to OSU, the Resers’ gifts to expand OSU’s football stadium reinvigorated the entire athletic program. Their $10.65 million commitment to the Linus Pauling Science Center gave OSU the private support to meet the Valley Foundation challenge and qualify for state funds.
The couple graduated from OSU in 1960: Al in business administration, Pat in elementary education (she later earned her master's degree in special education from Portland State University). Both have served on multiple OSU boards as volunteer leaders. Pat co-chairs the OSU Foundation Campaign Steering Committee, helping lead the university's first comprehensive fundraising campaign. She has been a member of the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees and chaired its External Relations Committee. She has served on the College of Science Board of Visitors and on the Women and Philanthropy Advisory Council. Al served on the Beaver Club Board of Directors and as an OSU Foundation trustee.
The next generation of Resers are also very strong supporters of OSU: Martin Reser, '83; Mark Reser, '88; Michael Reser; Michelle Bottaro, '90, '93; Mindy Reser, '94.
