Student Success Center

Student Success Center

Overview

On May 31, 2011, Oregon State University kicked off the construction of the planned 30,000-square-foot Student Success Center. The $14 million facility will house existing and new programs that serve both the general student population and student-athletes, including academic support and counseling services, learning laboratories, and proactive services to help students transition from high school to college-level learning.

During the ceremony, President Ed Ray shared, “This facility and the programs in it are for all students from all backgrounds and all parts of the university. When it comes to student success, nobody is privileged and nobody is excluded. If you enroll here, our expectation is that you will succeed.”

The three-story center will be constructed on 26th Street, next to the CH2M HILL Alumni Center, near athletic facilities and residence halls - a convenient location for student-athletes and many students in their first years at OSU. The facility will include space for classrooms, a computer lab, study lounge, and commons area as well as counseling offices, meeting rooms, and tutorial spaces. In addition, OSU’s existing September Scholars program and BEST Program will be housed in the new center.

Trustee Patrick F. Stone ’74, co-chair of The Campaign for OSU, explained that his own contribution was originally intended for the Athletic Department, but Athletics Director Bob De Carolis urged him to allocate this gift for a facility and programs that will help all OSU students succeed. “I was amazed by his foresight and his commitment to student success,” Stone said. “I may get into trouble for saying this, but I’m going to make a bold statement: OSU is a place where the Athletic Department is still a part of the university.”

Other special guests included Bradley P. Avakian ’84, State of Oregon Labor Commissioner and OSU Associate Provost Susie Brubaker-Cole.

Private donors have given $7 million, qualifying OSU for matching bonds from the state to fund this project. The lead $5 million gift was made anonymously. Naming opportunities in the Student Success Center are still available.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to be completed in June 2012.

September Scholars

September Scholars provides resources and support to help incoming students make the transition to college. It's one of the ways OSU seeks to increase its rate of student retention and serve Oregon resident students.

Participants include first-generation students, students from small high schools, and students from rurally isolated areas. They come from all across Oregon to participate in an intensive living and learning community prior to the start of fall term. The academic component of the program focuses on examining elements of college learning, exploring personal strengths, and developing study skills and strategies.

BEST Program

The BEST program helps student-athletes meet the diverse demands of college life, increase their academic success, and reach full integration into the life of the university.

Students participate in an intensive orientation to the campus, community, and college life. In addition, student-athletes participate in a START session to meet academic advisors and register for fall classes as well as receive orientation to academic procedures, study loads, resources, student services, and campus buildings.
