In 2007, two art professors at the OSU-Cascades Campus in Bend pledged a gift to establish an endowed professorship in the College of Liberal Arts. The married couple—Dr. Henry Sayre, a distinguished professor who has also achieved success as an author, and Ms. Sandra Brooke, an assistant professor of art and noted artist—designed the gift to support a teacher/scholar with an interdisciplinary background.
Dr. Sayre is perhaps best known for his art appreciation text, A World of Art, and for his production of a multimedia teaching package for art appreciation—a project that was funded by a $1.2 million grant from the Annenberg Foundation and aired nationally on PBS. He also wrote a monumental, 1,700-page study of the humanities titled The Humanities: Culture, Continuity & Change. His children's book, Cave Paintings to Picasso: The Inside Scoop on 50 Art Masterpieces, received a 2005 Oregon Book Award.
Ms. Brooke is an accomplished artist and educator who has played a key role in the success of the OSU-Cascades Campus Bachelor's in Fine Arts degree program. She was a producer of the art appreciation project that aired on PBS and is regularly featured in juried shows and exhibits.
