Judy Farleigh, '70, • My family: Married 38 years to Scott Farleigh (attorney with Farleigh, Wada, Witt in Portland), two sons Kevin and Erik, and two lovely daughters-in-law, Ashleigh and Erika. Staying true to my Beaver roots has been difficult in this family. Not only is my husband a die-hard Duck, but Kevin, Erik, and Erika all graduated from the University of Oregon. Fortunately, Kevin came through when he married Ashleigh, who is a 2001 OSU graduate and my ally in all things orange and black.
• In my spare time I enjoy: Although I have been retired from NW Natural for eight years, it seems like I have very little spare time. We split our time between homes in Government Camp and the Oregon coast. When I am at the mountain, I love to ski, snowshoe, and hike, and I read lots of books when the snow flies. At the coast, sailing, hiking on the beach, and biking are favorite activities. I also spend many hours in front of the computer trying to edit our photos and home video into something worth watching.
• Highlight of my past year: Last summer we sailed our boat to Alaska. We spent three months living aboard and sailed over 3,000 miles through conditions that ranged from almost tropical (temperatures in the 80s-90s near Ketchikan) to a real arctic experience dodging icebergs near Juneau. We met many interesting people and had numerous close encounters with wild animals. It was an exciting way to spend the summer!
• An aspect of my life I never could have predicted: I have become a football junkie. I certainly could not have predicted (and am quite embarrassed to admit) that I often root for the team from Eugene and that I even occasionally dress in green and yellow. I am, however, a Beaver in my heart and always wear the Orange and Black at Civil War time.
• Why I joined the Women's Giving Circle: I was excited to be able to make a small contribution that actually has an impact. We hear a lot about major donors to universities and how their gifts have funded important programs and building projects. I think that this makes it difficult for ordinary people to feel like they are making a meaningful contribution. It was appealing for me to be able to give a few dollars and know that they are going for a cause that I care about.
