Campaign gifts transforming campus brick by brick

Linus Pauling Science CenterOregon State University is experiencing its greatest construction boom in history, with support from contributors to The Campaign for OSU.

Previously, OSU's greatest single-year record for construction was in 1909-10, when nine building projects were underway. At least a dozen projects have been in process in 2010 and 2011; more than 20 facility projects have been completed with campaign support.

Here's a summary of a few of these campaign-supported building projects:

April 17, 2012, grand opening: OSU's historic Education Hall was reopened and renamed Joyce Collin Furman Hall following extensive remodeling and seismic upgrades thanks to state, university and donor support. our completely renovated Education Hall. This iconic structure honors the memory of one of OSU's Campaign Steering Committee members, a 1965 College of Education graduate who became a well-known Portland philanthropist, community leader, and advocate for youth.

Oct. 14, 2011, grand opening: The centerpiece project of The Campaign for OSU, the Linus Pauling Science Center is a 105,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that houses the Linus Pauling Institute and chemists from the College of Science, and contains classroom and laboratory space for students and researchers studying chemistry, biology, and life sciences. The $62.5 million project is OSU's largest-ever academic building project. Funding for the new facility represents a public/private partnership including $31.25 million in state bonds, a $20 million grant from the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, and a gift of $10.65 million from Al Reser '60 and Pat Reser '60.

October 2011 purchase: OSU-Cascades purchased its first building, thanks to a gift from Bend resident Allan Bruckner, along with funds from the state.

Sept. 24, 2011, grand opening: The $1.5 million OSU Boathouse provides a beautiful new home for the men's and women's rowing teams.

Sept. 8, 2011, grand opening: Funded by a gift from the estate of the renowned Oregon philanthropist, the Hallie Ford Center for Healthy Children & Families houses programs investigating child and family health issues and implementing their findings in communities throughout Oregon and beyond.

June 14, 2011, groundbreaking: A multi-phased campaign is underway to construct a new track and field complex, expand the women's track and field program, and build an endowment that will allow men's track and field to return to OSU. The effort to build Whyte Track and Field Center is off to a running start with lead gifts from donors including Luana Kapuniai Whyte '72 & Jim Whyte '70 and the Ralph Hull Foundation.

May 31, 2011, groundbreaking: A new Student Success Center will address one of the highest goals of the university's strategic plan: increasing student retention and graduation rates. Extended programming is already underway, such as the BEST and September Scholars bridge programs that help students acquire the skills they need to be successful college students.

May 11, 2011, groundbreaking: A new Native American Cultural Center will replace the Quonset hut that has been the Native American Longhouse for 40 years. This is the first of four new cultural centers that will be built on campus with a combination of private gifts and university funds. The project got off the ground with a generous gift to the President's Fund for Cultural Centers from the late Joyce Furman '65.

Under construction: The James E. Oldfield Animal Teaching Facility, which will consolidate lab, surgery, and teaching spaces with animal housing and allow Animal Sciences students and faculty to work in one centralized location.
