Jim Youde and Judith Atwood Youde, two alumni who met at Oregon State and married shortly after graduation, recently made a
$1.4 million pledge to their alma mater.
The gift will primarily support scholarships for students in business and agriculture sciences. Other portions will support the OSU Alumni Association, faculty in applied economics, healthy aging research, the Linus Pauling Institute, and the library.
"We owe a huge debt to OSU, and we are fortunate enough to be in a position to give back," said Judith Atwood Youde.
After graduating in 1962, the Youdes both undertook education careers: Judith as a high school business education teacher and Jim as an agricultural economics professor - he even taught for a time at OSU. In 1977, the couple founded Northwest Economic Associates, Inc. a natural resource and economic consulting firm in Vancouver, Wash. Jim served as president for 20 years and Judith managed the company's finances for 18 years, as secretary/treasurer and as CFO.
Now retired, the Youdes continue to be very active with their alma mater. They have served on the Alumni Association Board and on the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees.
"Jim and Judith are tremendous examples of successful alumni who have a deep commitment to helping the next generation of OSU students," said President Ed Ray. "We are so grateful for their support and their leadership."
The Youdes were able to make such a generous commitment in part by taking advantage of a planned gift called a charitable remainder trust, which can provide donors with an income stream and tax benefits, while creating a gift for the university in the future.
