Planning the Future

From bequests to gift annuities, donors can enjoy tax benefits or supplemental income
and know their careful planning today will make a difference for OSU tomorrow.

Former teacher supports children's future—and her own

Take it from Joy Hoerner Rich, a kindergarten teacher for 28 years: a charitable gift annuity is a great way to share.

A 1945 home economics graduate who also taught home economics for several years, Joy designated her gift annuities—she has created three—to support childhood nutrition education at OSU's College of Health and Human Sciences. In return for these gifts, Joy receives guaranteed income to help fund her retirement.

"It's been wonderful to help my university, to not just improve my own life, but to improve the lives of others," Joy said recently. Her gifts were also a chance to honor her father, Godfrey Hoerner, a 1916 graduate of Oregon Agricultural College.

Here's how a charitable gift annuity works: you donate an asset such as cash or securities to the OSU Foundation. The Foundation reinvests the asset. You receive a charitable tax deduction for your initial gift and fixed payments for your lifetime—sometimes at rates higher than stocks and bonds—and often a portion of the payment is tax free. After your lifetime, any remaining gift annuity assets will be distributed to the area of your choice at Oregon State University.

In Joy's case, she contributed appreciated stocks that were subject to significant capital gains tax if she had sold them. Since Joy donated the stocks, they were not subject to the capital gains tax; she received a charitable tax deduction, and the gift annuity helped provide her with retirement income. Her gift is also a reflection of her OSU education and an extension of her life's work, helping young children grow and learn.

A charitable gift annuity is a wonderful way to share what you've learned—and earned—with the next generation.

If you are considering a gift annuity, now is a great time to start one, as annuity rates will decrease on July 1, 2008.
